On October 8, the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2019 was announced. The prize was awarded to "help us understand the evolution of the universe and the position of the Earth in the universe", and a total of 9 million Swedish kroner prize was shared by three cosmic explorers. Half of the prize was awarded to Jim Pibbles, a physicist from the United States, for his theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology; the other half was awarded to Didier Quiloz and Michel Mayer from Switzerland for their discovery of an extragalactic planet orbiting a solar star.
On October 7, 2019, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was announced. William Kelling, a professor at Harvard University, Peter Ratcliff, a professor at Oxford University, and Greg Semenza, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, won the prize. This is in recognition of their contribution to understanding the mechanisms of cellular perception and adaptation to oxygen change.
The three Nobel laureates'groundbreaking findings reveal one of the most important adaptation processes in life, according to the official website of the Nobel Prize. They have laid the foundation for understanding how oxygen levels affect cell metabolism and physiological function. Their findings also pave the way for new strategies to fight anaemia, cancer and many other diseases.
